Feb 21: Why Techies shouldn't have toys

The main reason not to let techies have toys is that if they have toys, they'll play with them.

In this case, the playing was to make some time-lapse movies of the chestnuts growing. The third seed pushed out of the dirt on the 19'th, and after a couple days of intermittent hacking around, I got a working set of camera control scripts, jpeg photos and reconfiguration scripts to make a small movie.

These trees showed up about a day apart, so the movies are roughly what a tree looks like a 5, 4 and 3 days above the dirt.

Each of these seedlings came from seeds that had already sprouted when I planted them.

The trees are placed so that the window is on the right hand side when viewed in the movies. There is a growlight directly over the trees, and house lights to the left. As the day progresses, the trees move toward the window, and then back toward the growlight.

There are some sudden changes in the trees position. This is the gap between 9 PM and 6 AM. The overhead growlamp is turned on and off at 6:00 AM and 9:00 PM. After 9:00 pm, the trees track on the lights in the house, but there's not enough light to take photos.

Here are the movies, with techie details on another page.

The Mpeg4/Divx and AVI formats should play well on a Linux system using Xine (works on my SuSE 10.0 test system). The Microsoft WMV Friendly version should play under WMV (works on my W2K test system).
